Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter (for cooking)
  • 4 slices rye bread
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 10 minutes.
  2. In a bowl, season ground beef with salt and pepper. Form into four patties slightly larger than the bread.
  3. Sear the patties in the same skillet over medium-high heat for 4-5 minutes on each side until browned but juicy.
  4. Place Swiss cheese on top of each patty during the last minute of cooking to melt.
  5. Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. Assemble by placing a cheesy patty and caramelized onions between two slices, buttered sides out.
  6. Grill sandwiches in the skillet until both sides are golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side.
