Red velvet cookies are a delightful twist on a classic favorite, combining the rich flavors of chocolate with a vibrant hue and creamy frosting.

  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp red gel food coloring
  • Cream cheese frosting (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, cream the butter with granulated and brown sugars until fluffy (about 3 minutes).
  4. Add eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla extract and red food coloring until well combined.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, mixing gently to avoid overmixing.
  6. Using a tablespoon or cookie scoop, drop rounded dough onto prepared sheets with spacing.
  7. Bake for 10-12 minutes until edges are set; centers should remain soft.
  8. Allow cooling on racks before frosting.
